Last weekend I decided to pick up a new hobby. I’ve been brewing coffee for years, so tea felt like an easy adjacent move. Same rituals, same gear obsession, leaves instead of beans.

A few years ago this would have looked different. I would have dug into wikis, lurked in forums, asked around, watched videos. It would have taken weeks of slow accumulation before I felt ready to buy anything.

Instead, I did what a lot of us have recently started doing when we start something new. I opened the newest, shiniest chatbot in my bookmarks bar, asked for the best-bang-for-your-buck tools, where to buy good tea, what I needed to get started under a hundred bucks. Ten minutes later I had a shopping list, a starter set of recommendations, and the faint, satisfying feeling that I was already on my way.

That feeling is the lie.
